PRESENTATION

The Gent Gran web site is a web page in Catalan basically addressed to the elder and promoted by FATEC- Federació d’Associacions de Gent Gran de Catalunya, a non- profit organization that works for the active elder and which encompasses approximately 400 elder associations in the Catalan country.

The web page address is: www.gentgran.org and it began working the 1^st of October of 1999 coinciding with the Day and the International Year of the Elder.

With this presence in Internet we want:

1. To give access to information and resources for the elder.

2. To open new possibilities of participation and exchange among the elder.

3. To show the elder’s reality and their associative reality on the web.

4. To promote the access to new technologies (internet-e-mail, etc…)

The elders are already about 20% of our society. The Gent Gran Web page wants to be a meeting point for all these old people. In our case, for 11 million of catalan speakers, the elders are more than 2 million people, to whom we have to add the people who live in other countries and who, thanks to today’s technology can have those points of contact with their countries. We cannot forget either, those people younger than 65 years old who are interested on information about their retirement or young people who look for information and services for their parents and grandparents.

The "Federació d’Associacions de Gent Gran de Catalunya" (FATEC) is a non-profit entity and recognized of Public Use, which encompasses the associacions of elder people of Catalunya, either from homes or clubs as well as specialized associacions of other kind, as long as they are integrated by elder people.

FATEC promotes activities and actions in favour of the promotion of the elder in our society. We are the home and the common space of the partnership of the elder and the colective and organized voice of the elder in the construction of a fair and solidary country participating in all social activities.

Our job is to consolidate and develop the partnership of the elder (offering support, promoting the creation of the new realities of partnership wherever there aren’t any ), being representative of the opinion of the elder, promoting an active role. The decentralized structure with the Territorial Delegations and commercial delegates favours the proximity of the associacions around all Catalunya.

Since its creation in 1982 and with its almost 400 federated entities, FATEC has a atrajectory and a social presence that have made it the most representative elder association in Catalunya. Among others, its represented in the "Consell Sectorial de la Gent Gran de la Generaliatat de Catalunya" (Catalan government). Its presence at an international level is also remarkable, especially through the "Federation International d’Associacions de Personees Agées" (FIAPA) which is U.N’s number one and of which the late FATEC president, Mr. Josep Roig, was the European vice-president.
